9 Networking tips for small businesses
Finding
business these days is getting increasingly difficult. To stand out from the
crowd of business owners trying to make their voices heard is even more
difficult in today’s digital age. So, here are a few points to make the most of
your networking meeting. 1. Be prepared Before you
attend the networking meeting, make sure that you have a strategy in place.
Have an answer ready when people ask you: What do you do? In one sentence you
need to explain to them exactly what you do and what makes you unique. Practice
the sentence and know it by heart without reciting it. 2. One minute In today’s
world, one minute is equally very short and very long. When it’s your turn to
introduce yourself and your company and you have only one minute, be prepared
with the message to convey to the audience. Don’t focus on your product or
service, but rather on the solution that you can offer other companies. Make it
easy for them to relate and see how you can help them. 3. Be real Don’t try to be
somebody you are not – be authentic. People are able to pick up when you’re
false. Be honest, but don’t play yourself down. And have an honest curiosity
about other people and what they do. 4. Listen Don’t just
stand there and pretend to listen to somebody else. Really listen – you never
know when you can learn from somebody else or whether the person in front of
you could be your next client. Ask questions and when you give out compliments,
be authentic. Don’t be rude and definitely don’t interrupt people with your own
story while they’re still speaking. 5. In the moment Be in the
moment, connect with people, make eye contact, introduce yourself and use a
firm handshake. When you meet somebody and introduce yourself, stand up (if the
situation allows it.) Have your business cards ready and hand one to the other
person. Don’t scratch in your handbag or search your pockets when you are
introduced – they should be ready to be handed to the other person. 6. Body language Be aware of
your body language when you speak to people. Don’t cross your hands in front of
your chest as people will think you’re trying to protect yourself. Give open
body language signals and be friendly. 7. Follow up When you meet
new people and you think they may use your services, follow up with them with
something interesting. Don’t expect them to remember you, but also don’t insult
their intelligence by thinking that they’ve forgotten you. Test the waters and
set up an appointment that will suit them. 8. Build
relationships People buy from
people who they build relationships with. If you are connected to people, they
can follow you on social media and learn more about you, they will trust you
easier. Instead of just getting their business card, ask them if you can
connect with them on WhatsApp and other social media platforms. 9. Look the part If your
business is to be a clown at events, you want people to remember that – so
dress like a clown. If your business is serious, like in the financial
industry, then you definitely want to look serious. Creative people tend to
dress in a creative way. Whatever your business, dress the part and wear
something that will impress people, where you can show off your business, or something
so unique that people will remember you. Remember that
the reason for networking meetings are to connect, engage and trade. Make the
most of your networking meetings.
