The salt room experience for health and tranquility
Have you heard about all the benefits of relaxing in a salt room? The tranquil space in the salt room offers mental and physical health benefits in the form of halotherapy, which includes inhaling tiny particles of salt that are released into the air.
Seriously consider taking this cleansing and detoxifying journey to wellness if you suffer from any of these conditions:
· Respiratory problems, such as coughing, asthma and upper respiratory infections,
· Infections and allergies,
· Mental health problems such as depression and anxiety,
· Some skin conditions, such as eczema.
(tip: always consult your physician first before taking alternative healing therapy)
How it works
The salt room at Energy Emporium in Brakpan is laid out with Himalayan salt blocks and the floor is covered with coarse salt. For about 30 to 40 minutes, you will spend some tranquil time in the room by either praying, meditating or just be within yourself, breathing deep and relaxing.
Tiny salt particles from within the room enter your body through your nose and are absorbed through your skin.
Stress relief
Even if you don’t suffer from any medical or mental conditions, just by sitting in the salt room for a while, breathing deeply, will help you to relax. The tranquil environment with the soft light and beautiful surroundings will calm the mind, which in turn may help you to relax.
Respiratory relief
Using a saline solution is known to help with respiratory relief and to aid with clearing mucus from the system. There is a much more scientific explanation on how it works, but in a nutshell, the tiny salt particles help to clear up the mucus in your nose and lungs.
It is said that the salt particles also help to boost your immune system by relieving allergies and infections within the body.
Skin conditions
Tiny salt particles absorbed through the skin can also assist with a variety of skin conditions and even have anti-aging properties. Problems such as acne, rash, eczema and psoriasis are also relieved through sessions in the salt room.
Where does it come from?
You’re not the only one who wonders who or where were the benefits discovered of being within salt rooms. There is actually nothing ‘magic’ about the discovery. The practice of spending time in salt caves started in the 12th century and was customary in Eastern Europe. These therapy session became known as speleotherapy.
Fast forward to the 1800s and people living in Poland realised that the salt miners who worked in salt mines every day didn’t suffer from respiratory problems and were actually extremely healthy. Research that was done in those mines indicated that the salt mine workers didn’t suffer from common colds and their lungs were free from allergies and infections.
In the meanwhile, tourists flocked to Eastern Europe to spend time in these salt caves to help them heal from a variety of health problems.
